President Obama Stirs Up Controversy Over His 60th Birthday Party

Obama caught dancing maskless during celebrity-packed birthday party

Amid concerns over the emerging Delta coronavirus variant, new video has emerged of former President Barack Obama dancing without a mask during his heavily-criticized 60th birthday party on Martha’s Vineyard Saturday evening.

The video was posted to Instagram by Erykah Badu, a well-known songwriter who attended the event along with dozens of other celebrities. Badu has since removed the video from her account. Other partygoers removed photos they had posted of Obama socializing with guests without a mask, according to The Daily Mail.

News of Obama’s birthday bash sparked criticism last week as several jurisdictions reinstated public health mandates due to the Delta variant. Following the backlash, the New York Post reported the Obamas “cut down the tremendous guest list” and would distribute masks to those attending the event.

The party was held in an outdoor tent at the Obama’s multi-million-dollar Martha’s Vineyard estate, located in Dukes County, Mass. The CDC classifies Dukes County as an area of high community transmission, recommending local officials encourage “universal masking in indoor public spaces in addition to other layered prevention strategies to prevent further spread.”

Critics have called the party a possible “super spreader” event, with the latest video of Obama dancing maskless stirring renewed frustration on social media.

Several public officials have been criticized over the past several weeks for appearing to disregard their own coronavirus guidance. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser was criticized for celebrating her birthday maskless just hours before D.C.’s renewed mask mandate was put into effect.

Likewise, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot allowed the Lollapalooza music festival to go on despite threatening to reinstate public health mandates if coronavirus cases continued to rise, according to Fox News. Lightfoot pointed to the fact that the event was outside and reportedly high vaccination rates among its attendees as reasons for allowing the event to take place.
