Grady Judd, the sheriff of Polk County, which neighbors Sarasota County and its city of North Port, is speaking out Thursday about the Gabby Petito homicide.

“I can tell you, at this sheriff’s office, when he showed up with [Petito’s] car and she was no place to be found, we would have never let him out of our custody that day,” Judd said in response to a question about Petito from a reporter. “Other than that, I’m not sure where their investigation is.”

As of midday Thursday, the location of Brian Laundrie – the person of interest in Petito’s death — remains unknown.

“I can tell you that, according to Florida law, when [Petito] was a victim of domestic violence originally, he would have been arrested,” Judd added.
